Book Group Questions

  1. How did the settings and time frames of The Last of the Pascagoula enhance or take away from the story?
  2. How did the author convey themes, including controlling one’s destiny, art as healer and mid-life transformation?  Was she successful?
  3. What did you think of the characters’ often larger-than-life qualities?  What did these qualities represent in the context of the plot?
  4. Were Kate and her friends right in assisting Tom?  Why or why not?
  5. Was the concept of making art in response to trauma believable?  Have you ever known or known of anyone like Martha?
  6. Did any aspect of the book make you uncomfortable?  Did it make you think in a new way about your own life or your world view?
  7. Did you identify with any of the characters?  Or, were any of them so alien to you as to be incomprehensible?
  8. Many of the relationships in the book center on families, parents and children. Discuss the many recombinant families in the book.
